Questioning political, religious and socio-cultural changes and continuities in the “longue durée”.

    About

(Early) Modern History analyses the structures and dynamics that define European societies and their colonial empires between +-1500 and +-1850. At the Institute of History, we focus on the Southern Netherlands and on the Duchy of Luxembourg in its transregional embedding during this pivotal period. We study this area’s political and military role as part of the composite monarchies of Spain, Austria and France. We highlight the uses of the written and spoken word and the staging of power and resistance. Religious and socio-cultural changes and continuities are also approached in the “longue durée”, with a focus on the intermediate area between the Rhine and the Maas during this period of both confessional strife and spiritual renewal.
