On behalf of staff and former staff and students, the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Educational Sciences at the University of Luxembourg expresses its profound sadness at the passing of Prof. Dr Wolfgang Kühlwein, Professor for English Philology at the University of Trier.
Wolfgang Kühlwein was not only a dedicated scholar but also a highly esteemed educator and mentor. In his prolific and distinguished academic career, he made significant contributions in the fields of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, Medieval Studies, and Language and Culture. He was affiliated with the University of Luxembourg and its predecessors (Centre Universitaire de Luxembourg, Cours Universitaires de Luxembourg) as an adjunct member of staff from 1971 to 2015. In this capacity, he contributed to establishing English as a field of study in Luxembourg and was awarded the Ordre de Mérite du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg in 1992. In the mid-1990s, he served on a number of committees and advisory boards focusing on the development of higher education and Modern Language curricula in Luxembourg. Wolfgang Kühlwein is remembered with fondness for his unwavering support and for his ability to inspire students and colleagues alike.
His student-centred approach and his courses on the cultural history of English, English linguistics, and the British Middle Ages have influenced generations of English teachers in Luxembourg. His legacy lives on in the memories of those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
