The Institute of Philosophy is pleased to announce the upcoming guest talk by Prof. Dr. Christian Pillar on “Why interpersonal comparisons of utility and well-being might be problematic: A philosophical analysis”.
Abstract:
This talk sets out to accomplish three tasks. First, it explains the nature of the problem of interpersonal comparisons. Secondly, understanding the nature of the problem will show that there are three kinds of possible solutions. Thirdly, it will show that each solution depends on philosophical assumptions which can and have been denied. If we reject each of the assumptions underlying the three solutions, the problem of interpersonal comparisons of utility and well-being will remain unsolved. The talk will end by assessing the implications such scepticism would have for moral and political thought.
