The Institute of Philosophy is pleased to invite to the guest lecture by Dr. Ian Robertson on:

Skilled Actions and Intellectual Thought

Abstract:
In his new book, Peter Carruthers (2023) argues against intellectualism about know-how—the view that know-how is entirely reducible to knowledge of facts. In this talk, I argue that his arguments at times border on uncharitable, and that they can be strengthened. I close by considering what an intellectualist might say about the capacity of large language models to solve certain commonsense/relevance issues that plagued classical AI.
