SEMILUX is back!
The University, LIS Datacenter and LISER invite you for a monthly seminar on social inequality and public policies, which will be held ONLINE and IN-PERSON.
Abstract:
How are on-going energy transitions reshaping society and economy? Drawing on qualitative research in Pakistan, Asha will discuss what is driving one of the most rapid solar revolutions in the world today and its impacts on electricity access, inequality, and economic growth in this country of 240 million people. Renewable energy has been heralded by scholars and activists as having the potential to transform social relations and redistribute political and economic power. However, Asha’s research strongly surfaces the dilemma between urgency and justice and the danger of market-led development. On the one hand, the speed and scale of solar uptake is significantly reducing demand on the fossil-fuel dominated grid, but on the other it is reinforcing inequality at the household level and further damaging the fiscal health of the state. Asha will argue that the way out involves reimagining and reconfiguring the public sector – not a simple task, but a necessary one.
