Roughly, ‘rational reflection’ is the capacity for thinking and reasoning about normative features of one’s own attitudes in a reflective and self-conscious way and with the aim of forming more appropriate attitudes. While it is an open question whether all reasoning requires this capacity, it is clear that it is a very important element in the cognitive toolbox of mature human agents. How does it work? What are its powers and limits?
