Small Literatures in Europe: Definition, Concepts, Typology, and Methods for Comparative Study

This conference brings together scholars to examine the forms, functions and future trajectories of small literatures in Europe. The papers address a set of shared research questions: How can we define and classify small literatures? Which morphological features distinguish them? How do peripheral or marginal traditions contribute to national cultures and broader European identities?

Through case studies of Belgian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Estonian, Finnish, Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian, Luxembourgish, Maltese and Slovenian literatures, as well as Central European cultures, participants will explore how small literary systems negotiate visibility, cultural authority and world literary positioning. Other contributions investigate the history of literature in post-imperial/post-colonial settings, while still others analyse digital methods for tracing literary development or the reception of smaller traditions across Europe.
