Speaking Bias into Being – How communication fosters subjectivity in moral judgment

Moral judgment is often assumed to be deliberate and fair, yet bias emerges readily. This talk explores how media and relationships shape moral judgment biases. First, I will review work that demonstrates that the magnitude of bias corresponds to the severity of moral violations committed by media characters. Then, by leveraging the dynamics of real-life relationships, I will show how relational closeness biases moral evaluations. Lastly, I will share data showing how an AI’s emotional expressions can elicit pity when humans abuse them, ultimately producing moral judgment biases. By understanding these mechanisms, this talk will highlight how communication plays a crucial role in speaking bias into being.
