Prof Janne FENGLER

Janne FENGLER is a full professor in Educational Sciences / Teacher Training at the Department of Education and Social Work and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences.

Janne has been involved with questions of methodology and didactics for different target groups of education, training and further education since the beginning of her academic career. She is particularly recognized for her research regarding the development of skills, knowledge and attitudes using innovative learning methods at the interface of intentional learning and lifeworld orientation. Janne has enriched the impact research on experiential education both empirically and through contributions on the theory of science and respective implications on relationships between theory development, research activities and practical applications. As a qualified systemic consultant / coach / supervisor (SG, DGSF), she is also interested in systemic contributions of multiple stakeholders in the educational system. Her current research focuses on experiential / outdoor education, transformative learning / future skills, professionalization in formal and non-formal education, contributions of educational sciences to social work / victimology as well as sustainability education in the generation Z.

As program director of the Bachelor en Formation Pédagogique, Janne teaches various courses in this program, as well in the Bachelor en Sciences de l’Éducation, the Bachelor en Sciences Sociales et Éducatives and in the Master en Sciences de l’Éducation.

Janne is an internationally acknowledged expert in questions of accreditation and quality development in higher education (AHPGS, AQAS) and advises universities in this function to tackle their respective emerging societal challenges. She is an active member of the experiential education community and board member of the German GFE, Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Erlebnispädagogik (Society for the Promotion of Experiential Education) as well as numerous other professional associations and networks. Janne is editor in chief of the journal “Weiterbildung” and co-editor of the journal “erleben und lernen” (publisher ZIEL), as well as the responsible editor of the German online encyclopedia “Erziehungswissenschaft, Fachgebiet Erlebnispädagogik” (publisher Beltz) and the publication series “erleben und lernen” (publisher Reinhardt). In addition, Janne performs development cooperation tasks on a voluntary basis (SES).

During her studies, Janne worked as an educator in child and youth work and as a trainer in adult and continuing education for non-profit organizations. After completing her doctorate, she took on responsibility as a product developer, trainer and consultant in international projects in Asia, Australia, the USA, South America and Europe in the areas of human resource management, organizational development, consulting and educational evaluation. After that, Janne accepted an offer of a substitute professorship for methods of social work and cultural education at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences; this was followed by a tenure-track junior professorship at the Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences, Germany. Before her appointment at the University of Luxembourg, she held a full professorship in educational psychology and childhood education there for many years. During that time, she took on responsible leadership roles and academic self-administration tasks, including serving as dean, vice dean, co-chair of the senate and member of the board of trustees.

Janne completed her studies in Educational Sciences as well as in psychology and sociology as well as her PhD at the Heinrich Heine University of Düsseldorf, Germany. Her PhD thesis was on the topic of experiential education and self-concept under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Christine Schwarzer.
