Socioeconomic disparities in suicide: a case study into health inequalities.

Abstract: Socio-economic inequalities in health (SIH) remain a contentious topic of research and policy, garnering attention even in affluent European countries. While signs of wavering in research attention have emerged, there has been a notable increase in interest from influential organizations such as the OECD. Are health inequalities still on the menu? This talk will explore the ongoing significance of health inequalities in both research and policy realms. We will delve into the specific domain of socioeconomic inequalities in suicide, examining their evolution in Europe, the nuances of the causation/selection debate, the distinctions between absolute and relative inequalities, the concept of death of despair, and various policy responses. Additionally, we will analyze potential causal inferences drawn from research in this area. The talk will conclude by discussing recent perspectives and offering insights into future directions for research and policy interventions.
