Research and Development Specialist

Isabelle Pigeron-Piroth is a Research and Development Specialist at the Department of Geography and Spatial Planning. She is also member of the Uni-GR Center for Border Studies inside the working group Cross-border Labour and Education. With researchers from different universities in Switzerland, she is a founding member of the Research Group LABOR SwissLux focusing on cross-border commuters in Luxembourg and Switzerland.
As an applied economist with a geographical twist, Isabelle is particularly interested in the spatial aspects of employment and mobilities. Her research focuses on cross-border work in Luxembourg and the Greater Region, and more specifically on the sectoral segmentation and spatial structuring of cross-border labour markets. Her recent research is also about comparisons with other areas characterized by cross-border work, such as Switzerland.
She has published different papers and studies about cross-border commuters (Geo-Regards, 2021 ; Nomos, 2020 ;Espace, Populations et Sociétés, 2018 ; Routledge, 2017 ; Revue Française de Socio-Economie, 2016 ; Geo-Regards, 2011 ; Travail et Emploi, 2006 etc.). She also co-edited a book with Rachid Belkacem « Le travail frontalier au sein de la Grande Région Saar-Lor-Lux » (PUN, 2012), and on cross-border commuters in Switzerland with Claudio Bolzman and Cédric Duchêne-Lacroix (L’harmattan, 2021), as well as a book on cross-border work in Europe with Franz Clément, Rachid Belkacem and Christian Wille (Larcier, 2023).
Isabelle Pigeron-Piroth works at University of Luxembourg since its creation (2003). After studying Economics at the University of Nancy 2, she started in 1996 her professional career at the STADE (Statistics and Decision) unit of the former Public Research Centre in Luxembourg, where she conducted one of the first studies about cross-border commuting in Luxembourg. In 2003, with the creation of the University of Luxembourg, the STADE unit became part of the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences.
Isabelle Pigeron-Piroth obtained her master’s degree in economics at the University of Nancy in France in 1995.
