Are human rights imposed upon experience, or do they take shape within its flux?

How are human rights (made) relevant in everyday life?

What social developments give rise to human rights as a form of knowledge?

This conference brings together scholars who wish to explore human rights through the lens of the sociology of knowledge, focusing on how the human being is socially constructed as a subject of rights. Key themes include the formation and institutionalisation of human rights knowledge, the relevance of human rights in everyday life, the affective and experiental dimensions of rights-based subjectivity as well as the potential irrelevance, insignificance, or even negation of human rights. By interrogating tensions between universalism and particularism, generalisation and specification, inclusion and exclusion, the event critically engages with both the normative ubiquity and enduring fragility of human rights incontemporary societies.
