Governance, consensus and legitimation

Power – be it in the form of rulership or another type of dominance – is not examined as something one ‘holds’. Researchers at IHIST explore complex processes of achieving legitimation and recognition and thus creating structures of power. The constant renegotiation of legitimation is framed by social norms and cultural expectations. The analysis of power relations therefore entails an exploration of the dynamics of authority, resistance and empowerment.

    About

The exercise of power is studied at the Institute of History through all its forms of governance: communication, representations of power, negotiations and communication between the various players in political society, with a focus on the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period, but also over the long term, up to the 19th century.
