Thomas SIGLER

Dr Thomas Sigler is a Guest Professor of Geography in the Department of Geography and Spatial Planning (DGEO), and Associate Professor and Deputy Head of School in the School of the Environment at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.

Dr Sigler is an urban and economic geographer, with a strong interest in the nexus between urbanisation and globalisation. In Luxembourg, he has collaborated with Markus Hesse (DGEO), Sabine Dörry (LISER), and several others for approximately a decade on ‘relational cities’, ‘global city networks’ and planning issues relating to financial centre development. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers with a global network of collaborators. He is a project member on the FNR-funded FINCITY project, which aims to better understand the interaction between urbanisation and financial markets in Europe in a post-Brexit environment.

Dr Sigler is a frequent contributor to modules in the Master in Geography and Spatial Planning and Master in Architecture programs at UniLu.

Dr Sigler is a recognised expert on Airbnb and short-term rental policy, and regularly appears on Australian television. His work has been featured more than 50 times in The Guardian, The Atlantic, South China Morning Post, ABC, The Australian, Courier-Mail, Brisbane Times, Sydney Morning Herald and the Australian Financial Review.

He has been awarded 15 competitive grants, including from the Australian Research Council (ARC), Luxembourg National Research Fund (Fonds National de la Recherche – FNR), and the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Dr Sigler is an Associate Professor in Geography, and Deputy Head of the School of the Environment at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. He has been a Guest Professor of Geography at the University of Luxembourg since 2020.

Dr Thomas Sigler obtained his Bachelor in Geography and International Relations at the University of Southern California, and a Master and PhD in Geography at the Pennsylvania State University.
