The University of Luxembourg is taking a major step forward in fostering interdisciplinary research and international collaboration through its Young Academics Doctoral Fellows at IAS programme (YADIAS). The Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) team has secured €2.4 million in European funding under the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND, contributing to a total budget of €6 million for five years. The programme, hosted by the IAS, will support fifteen doctoral fellowships, providing talented young researchers from around the world with the resources and mentorship needed to pursue bold, interdisciplinary projects.
YADIAS is designed to attract highly motivated doctoral candidates across all research fields and sectors. By promoting projects that span at least two academic disciplines and involve research in multiple locations through secondments, the programme encourages innovative approaches that break down traditional academic boundaries. This structure ensures that fellows gain exposure to diverse methodologies, perspectives, and collaborative networks, preparing them to tackle complex societal, scientific, and technological challenges.
The University of Luxembourg strengthens its position as a premier destination for international researchers through this initiative. By integrating the programme within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, YADIAS provides access to Europe’s competitive research ecosystem while offering the University’s fellows unique opportunities for career development, networking, and visibility at the international level.
The selection process for YADIAS is rigorous and fully transparent. Candidates are evaluated by international experts and the IAS Scientific Council, ensuring the highest standards of excellence. Successful applicants are admitted into one of the University’s 13 doctoral study programmes offered across four Doctoral Schools, where they will benefit from comprehensive training in both scientific expertise and transversal skills such as leadership, communication, and project management. The training is carefully tailored to each fellow’s career ambitions, ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in academia, industry, or other professional paths.
YADIAS also emphasizes community, mentorship, and diversity. Fellows benefit from peer-to-peer and cross-generational mentoring, fostering a supportive environment where interdisciplinary ideas can flourish. The programme cultivates an international and multicultural cohort, encouraging exchange, collaboration, and innovation across borders. This vibrant community is designed to stimulate creativity, enhance problem-solving capabilities, and build confidence among early-career researchers.
The programme represents a long-term investment in the future of research. By supporting interdisciplinary doctoral projects and nurturing the next generation of international researchers, YADIAS contributes not only to the academic excellence of the University of Luxembourg but also to the broader European and global research landscape. Fellows will emerge from the programme as highly skilled, versatile researchers ready to address the pressing scientific, societal, and technological challenges.
The call for applications opens on 1 September 2026, and doctoral studies are expected to start before summer 2027. Applicants from all disciplines and regions are encouraged to submit proposals, positioning themselves to benefit from one of Europe’s most innovative and supportive doctoral fellowship programmes.
The programme will be managed by Prof. Claus Vögele and Dr. Sylvie Fromentin. For any inquiries, please contact the IAS team.
