Today, on 26 September, we celebrate the European Day of Languages – a great opportunity to highlight how the European citizens’ initiative works in all 24 official EU languages.
Whether you say “Eh-Che”, “Eh-tsi” or “Eh-si”, we’re all talking about the same thing: the European citizens’ initiative (ECI).
With the ECI, you can launch or support an idea in any of the EU’s 24 official languages – and it will be translated so all EU citizens can join in. That way, everyone can discover, sign and take part in shaping the EU agenda.
Dr Elena Danescu, Manager of ED-UNILU and ECI Ambassador, actively participates in all ECI Network Meetings.
The ECI helps bring causes you care about to the EU level, sparking debates, raising awareness, and triggering policy changes. Once an initiative gathers 1 million verified signatures from at least 7 EU countries, the Commission thoroughly assesses the citizens’ demands and adopts an official reply explaining what it will do; in case it decides that no action is needed, the Commission explains why.
