About

Cryptoassets have experienced massive growth since the emergence of Bitcoin, and their total market capitalisation is currently estimated at over USD 1 trillion. Amid this evolution, their increasing interconnection with the traditional financial space emerged as a particular concern also for the Luxembourg financial sector. While the EU is taking lead in regulating this emerging field with the adoption of the Market in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR) in 2023, the relevant legal provisions show growing reliance on techno-legal assessments such as decentralisation. Against this backdrop, the CryptoReg project aims to perform an in-depth and cross-disciplinary analysis of emerging EU legislation and its application to different variants of cryptoassets, on which to ground policy recommendations to further develop the framework in light of technical needs and opportunities. It does so by focusing on (a) unique forms of market abuse, (b) enforcement and compliance, and (c) DAOs and decentralised systems. The National Centre of Excellence in Research in Financial Technologies (NCER-FinTech) was launched on 1 March 2023 within the framework of a co-funding instrument between the Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR) and the University of Luxembourg. The first phase of the NCER-FT includes 14 projects that benefit from combined expertise of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) and the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF) at the University of Luxembourg.
