Abstract:
The B Corp certification has gained global traction as a voluntary standard assessing ventures’ commitments to social, environmental, and governance goals. While academic interest in the topic has grown considerably, existing research remains fragmented across diverse theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches.
This paper systematically reviews the academic literature on B Corp certification and develops an integrative framework that organizes existing studies along four analytical dimensions:
- Theoretical foundations (e.g., hybrid organizations, stakeholder theory, legitimacy, identity)
- Antecedents of certification decisions
- Outcomes of certification across economic and non-economic domains
- Certification cycles, highlighting dynamic and temporal aspects
This publication contributes to consolidating and advancing the scholarly discourse on B Corp certification and offers practical insights for entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and certifying bodies.
