Professor and SnT founder Björn Ottersten has been awarded the honourary title of Chevalier de l’Ordre Grand-Ducal de la Couronne de Chêne. He received this distinction on Tuesday 3 September from the Minister for Research and Higher Education, Stéphanie Obertin.

“I am deeply honoured by this recognition which reflects the key role played by research and innovations in partnership benefiting Luxembourg society,“ said Prof. Ottersten.

The Order of the Oak Crown is awarded on National Day to members of government, deputies, state councillors, civil servants, elected representatives and personnel of municipal administrations, key players of the economic, social, cultural or sport sectors as well as to volunteers, according to the Luxembourg government.

In some cases, it may be awarded to people born outside of Luxembourg, as Björn Ottersten, who is Swedish, with the procedure requiring the consent of the foreign government.

It is HRH the Grand Duke who awards the Order, on the recommendation and with the countersignature of the Minister of State. The Order of the Oak Crown is one of Luxembourg’s four major honorary distinctions, alongside the Order of the Gold Lion of the House of Nassau, the Order of Civil and Military Merit of Adolphe of Nassau and the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
