Abstract
This cumulative dissertation argues that Information Systems (IS) have political dimensions, where power in the form of actors’ positional advantages plays a key role in shaping their development and eventual outcomes. The dissertation explores this theme in three domains: decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), metaverse development, and the construction of self-sovereign identity (SSI) models. Respectively, the included papers investigate the distribution of voting rights in DAOs, offer a typology and philosophical insights related to the development of metaverses, and delve into the construction of SSI in the public sector. Ultimately, the dissertation highlights the value of studying politics and power in IS, allowing for a deeper understanding of their implementation and consequences.
