Assist. Prof Bhavani Shankar MYSORE RAMA RAO

Bhavani Shankar M. R is an Assistant Professor of signal processing at the University of Luxembourg. He heads the Signal Processing Applications in Radar and Communications (SPARC) research group at SnT.

The research, anchored on signal processing theory and methods, aims at enhancing the performance of sensing and communications systems. The current focus lies on radar and integrated sensing and communications, with applications including automotive, human activity recognition, and situational awareness.

Bhavani Shankar has published over 200 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and conferences, has co-edited/co-authored three books (Wiley, IET and Artech House), and delivered over 10 tutorials at international conferences. He has been or is the supervisor/co-supervisor of 22 doctoral students.

He has organized multiple special sessions at conferences and has been a guest co-editor of special issues in prestigious IEEE magazines and journals. He currently serves as the Associate Editor of the EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing and the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems.

He was involved with the partnership programme with Société Européenne des Satellites (SES) (2009–2019) and with International Electronics and Engineering (IEE) (2015–). He is a co-inventor of 8 patent filings, including 5 at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Co-editor of the book on Joint Radar Communications that received special mention at the IEEE Press Awards 2025.

Co-author of a paper that received Honourable Mention in the IEEE AESS Barry Carlton Award Programme 2023.

Co-author of two papers entering the finals of the student paper competition, IEEE Radar Conference, 2019 and 2025.

Exemplary Reviewer Award, IEEE Transactions on Communications, 2016.

Co-recipient of the IEEE Communications Society Satellite and Space Communications Technical Committee (SSC-TC) Award for Distinguished Contributions to Satellite Communications in 2014.

Recipient of a gold medal from the Indian Institute of Science for being adjudged the best Master’s student in the Department of Electrical Communication Engineering in 2000.

Stood 6th in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), the all-India selection examination for graduate programmes, in 1998 with 99.90 percentile.

Recipient of the National Talent Scholarship from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Government of India, 1992.

Post-doctoral researcher in the Signal Processing Group, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, from 2007–2009; joined the University of Luxembourg in 2009.

Experience in telecommunications (Broadcom, 2006–2007) and multimedia (SASKE, 2000–2001) industries, and a research visit to ETH Zurich (2004).
