Prof Gilbert FRIDGEN

Gilbert Fridgen is Professor and PayPal-FNR PEARL Chair in Digital Financial Services at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability, and Trust (SnT), University of Luxembourg, and Coordinator of the National Centre of Excellence in Research on Financial Technologies. Gilbert Fridgen heads the FINATRAX research group, composed of over 35 team members on a PhD candidate or Postdoc-Level.

In his research, he analyses the transformative effects of digital technologies on individual organizations as well on the relationship between organizations. He addresses especially emerging technologies like Digital Identities, Distributed Ledgers, Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet-of-Things. His research involves information systems engineering, IT strategy and (risk) management, as well as regulatory compliance.

Dr. Fridgen holds a grant from the FNR PEARL Excellence Programme for Research in Luxemburg, which is a programe for attracting leading researchers from abroad to Luxembourg. The grant is offered by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and co-funded (in his case) by Paypal. He frequently publishes in academic journals and conference proceedings in management, information systems, computer science, and engineering, as well in outlets at the intersection of these disciplines. He was nominated and received best paper awards at multiple internationally recognised conferences. He edited conference proceedings of the most important German, European and International Conferences of Information Systems. He is an active reviewer and editor for various academic journals. His dissertation received the Cultural Award Bavaria 2010.

In his projects and industry partnerships, Gilbert Fridgen collaborates with partners in financial services, energy, as well as with public bodies and governments. Fridgen served as an expert for multiple governmental entities, such as the European Commission’s DG CONNECT and DG FISMA, as well as for the German Bundestag and multiple ministries in Luxembourg and Germany. Before joining the University of Luxembourg in 2020, he was he was Associate Professor for Information Systems and Sustainable IT Management at the University of Bayreuth, Deputy Director of the Project Group Wirtschaftsinformatik (Fraunhofer FIT), and of the FIM Research Centre. In 2013, he was visiting researcher at the University of Georgia, USA. From 2011 to 2013, he was Associate Professor for Business Engineering at the University of Augsburg.

Fridgen received his Diploma in Managerial Economics from the University of Augsburg in 2005. In parallel, he finished a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. He finished his doctoral degree at the FIM Research Centre Finance & Information Management in 2010.
