Prof Tegawendé BISSYANDE

Tegawendé F. Bissyandé is a Professor of Computer Science at Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), University of Luxembourg. He leads the Trustworthy Software (TruX) Research Group, which focuses on advancing research in software security, automated software repair, and explainable software. 

Tegawendé’s research lies at the forefront of software engineering and cybersecurity, where he develops innovative methods and techniques to enhance software reliability and security, particularly in program analysis, code review, and code generation. He has developed a strong expertise in automatic program repair, helping practitioners mitigate the impact of software bugs and vulnerabilities while also improving user experience.

He has co-authored over 100 articles published in highly esteemed academic venues (Google Scholar H-index: 54) and has presented his work at the headquarters of leading software industry giants, including Google, Huawei, and Facebook.

He serves as an Associate Editor for the Empirical Software Engineering journal, is a member of the Steering Committee of the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Software Engineering, and has contributed to programme committees of all premier conferences in his fields, such as ICSE, ASE, ESEC/FSE, and ISSTA.

His research, which applies Artificial Intelligence to software engineering, has been featured in top AI venues, including AAAI, ACL, and EMNLP etc.

Tegawendé serves as the Study Programme Director for the ERASMUS MUNDUS Joint Master’s in Cybersecurity at the University of Luxembourg. His teaching activities focus on software engineering and big data.

Tegawendé leads various initiatives to advance education in and with Africa. Notably, he serves as the Principal Investigator of the LuxWAyS and SnT4Dev projects, supported by Luxembourg’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, aimed at training multiple cohorts of PhD students from West Africa.

In collaboration with researchers from his home country, Burkina Faso, he has launched initiatives to establish a university incubator for students and a Centre of Excellence in AI for Development.

Additionally, he leads or co-leads partnership research projects across various domains, including FinTech (BGL BNP Paribas), Industry 4.0 (BMedical), Human Resources (Zortify), and Cybersecurity (LuxArmy).

Tegawendé has received several prestigious awards, including distinguished and best paper accolades at ASE, SANER, APSEC, KDD, and MSR. Additionally, he was awarded a flagship Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for his groundbreaking work on natural program repair.

As an engineer, he has received the Eiffel Scholarship (a prestigious grant for foreign students in France).

Furthermore, his PhD work, which made significant contributions to debugging the Linux Kernel, earned him the Distinguished PhD Award from the GDR GPL.

Before joining SnT in 2013 as a postdoctoral fellow (later becoming an Assistant Professor in 2019 and an Associate Professor in 2021), Tegawendé held visiting PhD positions at Singapore Management University (2012) and Université Pierre et Marie Curie (2011). In 2008, he completed an internship at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Tegawendé earned his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Bordeaux in 2013, an engineering degree in Telecommunications from ENSEIRB in 2009, and a Master of Science in Software Engineering from the University of Bordeaux in 2009. Prior to this, he completed his preparatory classes in Morocco at Lycée Ibn Taymia (2004–2006) after obtaining his high school certificate from Petit Séminaire de Pabré, a Catholic boarding school.
