On October 23rd, Margherita Pugnaletto and Ioana Visescu from ULIDE will participate in an in-depth panel discussion following the screening of Dismissed at the Cineast Festival. The award-winning Romanian mockumentary probes the boundaries between truth and fabrication, responsibility and corporate power. The event, part of the Cineast programme, brings together filmmakers and academics to reflect on the pressing question: What is the price of speech in a world where truth is commodified and responsibility diluted?
Dismissed, which won Best Romanian Feature Film at the Transylvania International Film Festival 2024, unfolds in the aftermath of a fire at a Romanian tech company. Blending the realism of documentary filmmaking with the tension of investigative drama, the film invites audiences to confront the ethical cost of silence, the fragility of justice, and the transformative (and sometimes corrosive) power of AI in shaping narratives and accountability.
The panel discussion will feature one of the film’s directors, Horia Cucută, alongside ULIDE’s researchers Margherita Pugnaletto and Ioana Visescu, who will contribute insights from the perspectives of ethics, philosophy, and artificial intelligence. Together, they will explore how emerging technologies and systemic inequalities are reshaping the boundaries of free expression, responsibility, and truth in the digital age.
