The AION cluster at the University of Luxembourg has been upgraded with silver busbars, improving its stability and performance for large-scale computational jobs requiring extensive multi-node communication.

Busbars are critical components of the cluster’s power distribution system, responsible for efficiently delivering electricity to computing nodes. The replacement of the original busbars with silver ones enhances electrical conductivity, reducing power fluctuations and improving reliability, particularly for large workloads.

To minimize disruption, the HPC team carried out the upgrade over two consecutive weeks using a rolling maintenance approach, temporarily reserving and shutting down small portions of the cluster at a time. This ensured that AION remained accessible to users throughout the process.

The operation was conducted in collaboration with two Eviden/Atos engineers, ensuring a seamless transition. With this enhancement, AION is now better equipped to support high-performance computing needs.
