National Centre of Excellence in Research and Innovation FutureFinTech

Who we are

FutureFinTech unites expertise from SnT (computer science, AI, cybersecurity) and FDEF (finance, law, regulation) at the University of Luxembourg to strengthen research and innovation critical to Luxembourg’s financial future.

Funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), the Ministry of Finance, and the University of Luxembourg, we bridge fundamental research and practical solutions, catalysing Luxembourg’s digital financial transformation.

More than a research centre, FutureFinTech acts as a catalyst for Luxembourg’s digital financial transformation.

An interdisciplinary approach to financial innovation

Modern financial systems are shaped by the interaction of:

  • Technology, which enables automation, data-driven decision-making, and scalability
  • Finance, which defines markets, incentives, and risk
  • Law, which ensures compliance, accountability, and the protection of rights

FutureFinTech integrates these perspectives to produce research that is technically robust, economically meaningful, and legally sound. This interdisciplinary approach is central to how FutureFinTech addresses issues such as responsible AI, digital assets, and regulatory compliance in a rapidly evolving financial landscape.

Our impact

FutureFinTech is more than academic research:

  • Industry collaboration

Joint research projects with financial institutions, policymakers, and regulators addressing real-world challenges

  • Innovation and spin-offs

Supporting technology transfer and entrepreneurship through SnT’s venture and innovation ecosystem

  • Policy contribution

Providing expertise that informs Luxembourg’s and Europe’s digital finance agenda

  • Education

Training the next generation of researchers through interdisciplinary PhD projects and Master’s programmes

  • International reach

Building global partnerships and contributing to leading scientific publications and international debates
