The Doctoral School of Economics, Finance and Management (DSEFM) and the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER) are happy to invite you to the next lecture of the 2025/2026 edition of our Doctoral Lecture series on Cross-Border Labor Mobility.

The lecture “The Assimilation of Immigrants in their Host Countries” will be given by Albrecht Glitz from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

A lunch will be served at 12.00 upon invitation only (LISER/UNI participants attending onsite are automatically enrolled).

Abstract:

This lecture examines how immigrants assimilate into their host societies. It will provide an overview of the key empirical patterns observed across countries and highlight the main obstacles and facilitators of the assimilation process. Particular attention will be given to immigrant wage assimilation and the challenges involved in accurately measuring it using standard datasets. An important insight is that immigrants’ wage assimilation is closely linked to the labour market impact of immigrants and the size and composition of new arrival cohorts. We will discuss the underlying theoretical mechanism for this interplay and study how it has shaped immigrants’ wage assimilation profiles in the United States over recent decades.
