Presentation

Through its research and training programmes, the University fosters an open-minded approach to legal analysis, going beyond the boundaries of national jurisdictions, to promote comparative cross-disciplinary research, within a multilingual environment (English, French and German) and an international academic team.

In accordance with its commitment to an open-minded European and international perspective, the school organizes opportunities for scientific cooperation and exchanges with universities worldwide. This facilitates student mobility in terms of international research placements.

Training

Our programme responds to the needs of doctoral candidates educated in legal systems and prepares them for competitive academic and non-academic future carriers

General skills and methods courses are combined with specific training in legal topics, including themes attached to externally funded research programmes on doctoral education. In addition to the creation of a stimulating research environment among PhD researchers through its own activities, the Doctoral School in Law favors mobility and supports participation in conferences and academic events at other academic institutions.

Doctoral researchers in Law can follow training sessions and courses offered by the Doctoral School and by the Central University, as well as participate in activities and courses organized by the Max Planck Institute in the framework of a cooperation agreement between the Institute and the University.

In conducting their individual research projects, the candidates are assisted not only by their supervisor but also by a thesis supervision committee that meets on a yearly basis. These yearly discussions help in formulating and implementing the Research and Training Plan and in developing critical thinking and research independence.

Admissions

You are eligible to apply for admission to doctoral studies at the University of Luxembourg if you hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent), as defined in the law (see University law art. 32, 3, and the Study regulations, Chapter 1).

Please be aware that Master’s degrees from outside Europe need to be equivalent to level 7 as defined in the Luxembourgish law on the recognition of degrees.

How to apply

  1. Respond to a job offer on the Job Portal of the University.
  2. Find a professor interested in your thesis project and who agrees to become the supervisor. Note that a professor will only accept to become your supervisor if your subject is in adequation with his research subject, if he considers that your background is sufficient and would help you to do your research. In this case, there will not be any financing.
  3. Regarding funding opportunities, the other way to get funding for a PhD would be the FNR programme AFR-PhD. You can find the information on this opportunity on the FNR website.
