Sports, Human Rights & Climate Justice: A people-first approach to Sports and Sustainability
Abstract
PhDs, Post-Docs, professors as well as interested external auditors, are cordially invited to participate in and contribute to our seminar series titled: “Human Rights: Insights into Today’s Challenges” hosted by the Doctoral School of Law. The aim of the seminar is to have an in depth discussion on a different human rights issue in each seminar. Presentations of 15 to 20 minutes (or up to 30 minutes if we have two or more speakers) will be followed by an open group discussion.
This seminar with explore the intersections between sports, human rights and climate change. It will be divided into two parts. Part 1 will introduce the links between sports and human rights – illustrating the various human rights risks in the sporting context and the current status of the sports and human rights conversations. Building on this discussion, Part 2 will focus on the bidirectional relationship between sports and the climate change – how sport contributes to worsening of the climate crisis and simultaneously how it is being impacted by the changing climate. More importantly, the focus will be on how this dynamic impacts the human rights of stakeholders such as athletes, workers, fans, volunteers, and local communities; and how can we leverage sport’s global reach to champion climate justice and influence business conduct.
