Luxembourg Learning Centre (LLC)

E-journals

In brief

Overview

The LLC offers a huge number of periodicals in digital format. The majority of these periodicals are electronic journals that are accessible via the a-z.lu catalogue. Subscriptions are needed to access the articles within many e-journals, apart from those published fully in open access. The majority of the LLC’s e-journal subscriptions were taken out in conjunction with Consortium Luxembourg, which negotiates licences for all members of the consortium.

  • a-z.lu

Academic e-journals are available through the a-z.lu catalogue. To search for e-journals, simply enter a title, ISSN or keyword in the search bar of the simple search. Via the filters “Type of publication” and “Show only” on the right you can restrict the result list to “journals” and “available online” only. Another option offers the Advanced Search: tick “Digital Library” in the top menu and set the “Material type” to “Journals” in order to restrict the search to e-journals only. Via both search options the result list shows for each e-journal a link “Available Online”.

Available for registered users via a-z.lu.

  • Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory

Directory of regularly or irregularly published periodicals (active, ceased or forthcoming).

Available for registered users via a-z.lu.

  • Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)

The open access e-journal titles listed in this directory are also included and searchable in a-z.lu

    Freely available online.

To access e-journals that are not published in open access you need to be registered with the library to make use of its licences. If you access content directly via a publisher platform without signing in beforehand on a-z.lu, you may be denied access even if the library has a licence. Some e-journals are only accessible on University premises in accordance with the licence conditions set by the publisher. See the information provided in a-z.lu for each e-journal.

More and more publishers are changing their business model for their journals, mainly in response to pressure from universities and libraries. The latter see it as increasingly unacceptable that researchers or their institutions need to pay to get articles published, and these same institutions are then obliged to pay again to access the (expensive) e-journals in which the articles are published.

This has led to many scholarly publications being published in open access, often funded by “Article Processing Charges” (APC). Business models differ and the options for publishing in open access vary, but articles or whole journals published in open access are freely accessible online.

Depending on the subscriptions/licences that we have with publishers or providers of journal databases, there may be access restrictions. Some volumes may not be included in a subscription or the licence regulations may include an embargo that prohibits access to the current issues of a journal (e.g. no access to issues published in the last 3 months/last year/last 3 years, etc.). You will be informed of any such restrictions when accessing an e-journal via a-z.lu.

Unlike the articles in print journals, the articles in e-journals are searchable in a-z.lu. If you cannot find an article, search for the title of the e-journal in a-z.lu and check the availability of the relevant journal issue. If you cannot find the e-journal title, there is probably no subscription yet. In this case, you can always contact our askalibrarian@uni.lu service or create an acquisition request in a-z.lu.
