DESCOM (Doctoral Education in Science Communication) is expanding its training offers to PostDocs in collaboration with ULearn, the internal learning and development catalogue. Interested PostDocs working at the University of Luxembourg can now take three different courses to improve their science communication skills.
One foundational course
The next edition of “Essentials of Science Communication” is taking place on 7/8 October. It teaches scientists the basics needed for their science communication projects. Ann Kiefer, a mathematician at the FHSE (Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences), attended the pilot edition of the Essentials course in June 2024:
‟ The course title gives a good sense of what to expect. It provides a solid overview, introduces you to new concepts, and shares practical tips and techniques. The course also covers useful skills, like on how to behave in front of a camera, how to answer interview questions, how to design your webpage so journalists can find you. Overall, it’s a valuable way to spend a day. Personally, I really appreciated the practical exercises. For instance, we were placed in front of a camera to conduct an interview while being filmed. Practicing this even once is far more valuable than just studying interview techniques in theory.”

Two advanced modules
Further advanced modules of half a day each are also offered to deepen the participants knowledge, focusing on storytelling and science events for lay audiences. You can now register for “Essentials of Storytelling” on 26 March and “Essentials of Events, Shows & Science Festivals” on 1 April.
The courses are part of the Essentials series of key training courses for postdoctoral researchers offered by ULearn. This series also includes courses on licensing and intellectual property that are offered in collaboration with the PaKTTO (Partnership, Knowledge & Technology Transfer Office) team. Places are limited and admission is granted on a first-come first-served basis. You can register now by clicking on the respective course names.
EDITED: The course “Essentials of Science Communication” was postponed from May to October.
