Four new hands-on science workshops on topics like reading, dyslexia, cancer, the immune system and cybersecurity can now be booked by secondary school teachers and other interested people. The activities have been developed by young researchers in the context of a science communication training from the DESCOM (Doctoral Education in Science Communication) project. Those researchers also carry out the workshops by visiting different schools in Luxembourg.

You can book one of the workshops (see descriptions below) by contacting Nicole Paschek (Project Manager of DESCOM) via descom@uni.lu

The secrets of reading

Crack the code of a secret message to discover how the brain learns to read. Through this hands-on decoding challenge, you’ll discover how just one little hint can make a wor(l)d of difference!
(English or French, 20 minutes, 9-12 years)

The many faces of cancer

Have you ever thought about why treatment works in some patients but not in others? In this hands-on activity, you’ll explore how scientists are using DNA sequencing to uncover the hidden differences between cancers, and how that can change the way we treat them. Plus, you’ll see how artificial intelligence is becoming a powerful tool to make sense of all that complex data! No lab coat needed, just your curiosity and an open mind!
(English, 50 minutes, 12+ years)

The immune system and cancer: friend or foe?

The immune system is our personal bodyguard, protecting us from different diseases. But did you know it can sometimes get hijacked by cancer cells forcing it to help the tumor grow? In this workshop, you’ll discover how cancer can trick and play hide and seek with the immune system.
(English or French, 50 minutes, 16+ years)

Defenders of the Digital World

Step into the shoes of cybersecurity agents! In this workshop, you’ll role-play as humans and AIs protecting a digital world. You’ll make crucial security decisions and discover where humans and AI shine, fail and why collaboration is key. You’ll face real-world security dilemmas, and decide who spots the threats, who makes mistakes, and how teamwork keeps the digital world safe.
(English, 20 minutes, 12+ years)

There’s even more!

We currently offer more than 10 science workshops. You can find the full offer on the website below. If you would like to organise a science activity on your own, you might be interested in the following guidelines and in subscribing to our newsletter:
