Secondary school teachers can now book one of seven new hands-on science workshops on topics like DNA, rare diseases, environmental pollution, fake news, engineering and virtual reality (VR). The activities are carried out by researchers who will visit different schools in Luxembourg.

The activities are carried out by young researchers that have developed them in the context of a science communication training from the DESCOM (Doctoral Education in Science Communication) project. In an introductory workshop with Nadia Battello they learned the basics and started working on their own activities, which they developed further in the upcoming weeks.

You can now book one of the workshops (see descriptions below) by contacting Nicole Paschek (Project Manager of DESCOM) via descom@uni.lu

Teaching Physics: Hands-On vs. VR

Dive into the world of physics through two distinct approaches: explore traditional hands-on experiments as well as cutting-edge Virtual Reality (VR). In this activity, you’ll compare these two approaches while exploring the working principles of an electric motor. Experience the strengths and limitations of each method and discover how both offer unique insights into the fundamentals of the universe. (English, 45 minutes – 2 hours)

3..2..1 Blast Off!

Launch your own rocket in 3 steps:
3. Learn the basics of rocket science and fun facts about space
2. Design and build your unique rocket
1. Blast off your rocket and watch it soar! (English, 2 hours+)

Clear up the infection!

Get to know the basic functions of your immune systems’ cells via a short game called “Immune System Competition”. Understand your adaptive immune system and the steps involved in the production of antibodies. (English, 45 minutes)

Environmental Detectives

Pollution is poisoning several animals in Luxembourg. Can you identify the chemical villains of those toxic tales? Play this game to learn more about different chemicals and their effect on the environment. (English, French or Spanish, 45 minutes)

From Sunscreen to Science: Protect Your Code Like a Pro!

Unravel the science behind DNA, UV radiation, and how sunscreen works to protect your genetic code. By extracting DNA from strawberries, building your DNA strands, and making DNA bracelets that can react to UV light you will explore the invisible world of molecular protection. (English, 45 minutes)

Flight to a Rare Destination: Navigating disease diagnosis

Embark on an exciting flight to uncover the difficult journey of diagnosing rare diseases. Experience the challenges faced by patients, explore the roles of doctors and other healthcare professionals, the variety of tests involved, and the complex steps patients take before reaching a final diagnosis. (English, 30 minutes)

True or False? Can You Spot Misinformation?

This interactive quiz will test your skills in spotting fake news! Along the way, you’ll learn how to detect misinformation and sharpen your ability to separate fact from fiction. (English, 45 minutes)
