Research Group Gene Expression Dynamics

The flow of information in cells

The Gene Expression Dynamics group, led by Dr Rico Schieweck, studies how mutations that affect the speed of information flow in cells are imprinted in proteins.

A glimpse into our research

Translation as the “gene gate” to the proteome

We study the speed at which ribosomes read along mRNAs. This so-called ribosome dynamics regulates key steps in gene expression such as RNA stability, protein levels and their folding. We are combining translatomics, interactomics and visual proteomics experiments to identify protein and RNA interactors of ribosomes that regulate their dynamics during stem cell differentiation.

The speed of ribosomes is influenced by the levels of aminoacyl-tRNAs, the stoichiometry of translation factors and the sequence elements embedded in transcripts.
