Dr. Venkata SATAGOPAM

Dr. Venkata Satagopam is a Senior Research Scientist and the Head of Clinical and Translational Informatics Group. For more detailed information refer to the ORCID

His research spans biomedical informatics, focusing on data integration and knowledge management, data curation, harmonisation and FAIRification, dynamic visual analytics, text mining, and deep learning, advanced machine learning and AI to bridge bench-to-bedside gaps. Since 2016, he has been the technical coordinator of the ELIXIR Luxembourg Node, leading data hub development and ensuring GDPR-compliant clinical data sustainability. He has delivered 25+ invited talks worldwide, published 94+ peer-reviewed articles, and serves on editorial boards of major journals. Over 12 years, he (co-)supervised 10 Master, 7 PhD students, 21 Postdocs, and multiple R&D specialists and developers.

Since 2024, he is coordinating  the course “Translational Biomedical Research in Neurodegeneration – from Bed-to-Bench-to-Bedside” and delivered introductory courses on translational research, biomedicine, and clinical bioinformatics to Master in Molecular and Computational Biology (MMCB) students at University of Luxembourg. From 2013 to 2015, he taught bioinformatics courses (Bioinformatics Introduction, Biological Databases) to Bachelor in Life Sciences Biology students and courses as Programming, Bioinformatics, and Genomics and Databases to Master in Integrated Systems Biology (MSB) students, including exam preparation and grading. Between 2006 and 2012, he annually taught EMBL International PhD Programme (EIPP)   courses on Introduction to Bioinformatics and Sequence Analysis, Text Mining and Information Retrieval, and Data Mining for High-Throughput Experiments.

He co-chairs ELIXIR Health Data Focus Group (HDFG)  (since 2020), ISCB Education Committee (since 2017), and ISCB TransMed COSI (since 2015), and serves on executive and data access committees of different international consortia. In 2015, he co-founded a spinoff ITTM S.A. from LCSB, University of Luxembourg. He mentors Master’s and PhD students through ISCB’s Luxembourg Regional Student Group (RSG). He organized ~30 conferences, workshops, and hackathons, including ISCB TransMed sessions and BioHackathon Europe since 2020. He promotes global bioinformatics education via ISCB, contributing to competency frameworks, curricula, and course endorsement processes (Brooksbank et al., 2024, bioinformatics degree course endorsement process). He co-leads ISCB Academy to deliver inclusive, free webinars for computational biology training worldwide.

Since 2022, he is a Fellow of the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS), Germany. He is currently supervising, as (co-)Principal Investigator (PI/co-PI), the following clinical & translational informatics research grants/initiatives he obtained such as IMI/IHI projects (BIOMAP, ImmUniverse, ImSAVAR, EPND, IDERHA), NCER-PD, CLINNOVA, CoVaLux, LEOPARD, MJFF-HeBA (LU, DE, AT, ES), COMMUTE, FAIRClinical, ELIXIR-LU. He successfully finished clinical and translational data management and analysis grants as PI/Co-PI – TAMAHUD, betaJUDO, IMI projects (eTRIKS, FAIRplus, AETIONOMY), various EU and FNR funded projects – HeartMed, SYSCID, B1MG, PerMedCoE, COVIRNA, CON-VINCE, ORCHESTRA, HealthyCloud, PREADAPT.

Between 2001 and 2003, he worked as a Bioinformatics Scientist in R&D at LION Bioscience AG, Heidelberg. In 2004, he joined EMBL’s Structural and Computational Biology Unit as a Scientific Programmer, becoming Senior Bioinformatics Scientist in 2010 and remaining until 2012. In 2013, he joined the LCSB at the University of Luxembourg as a Research Scientist, was appointed Deputy Head of the Bioinformatics Core in 2017, and in 2025 became Head of the Clinical and Translational Informatics Group.

Dr. Venkata Satagopam studied Bachelor’s and Master’s in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Postgraduate diploma in management information systems (computer applications, information technology major) equivalent to master’s degree. He obtained his PhD in Bioinformatics and System Biology from the Technical University Munich (TUM) in Germany (Summa cum Laude) and in 2022 obtained his accreditation to supervise research – ADR (autorisation à diriger des recherches).
