Causal Analysis of Biomedical Data – Prof. Simona Ester Rombo

This is a hybrid event. Join in person at the LCSB, or tune in remotely via Webex.

Inferring novel functional insights by the analysis of large-scale biological network

Large amounts of molecular, genotypic and phenotypic data are continuously being produced and stored in public databases. On the one hand, this represents an invaluable source for unravelling the complex mechanisms that involve cellular components in the onset and progression of complex diseases. However, their analysis is still a difficult task, especially when their size is large. We will focus on the solution of specific problems such as the prediction of associations between cellular components and diseases, the characterization of ill/health populations, the implementation of specific functionalities for biological network analyis by big data technologies.

About the speaker

Simona Ester Rombo is a Full Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Palermo since April 2023. Her research primarily focuses on bioinformatics, the design and analysis of algorithms, data mining, and big data analytics. She has made significant contributions to the development of efficient algorithms for analyzing biological networks, sequences, and structures. In addition to her academic roles, Prof. Rombo co-founded the innovative startup Kazaam Lab s.r.l. in January 2020, where she serves as the Scientific Director and CEO. She is an active member of the organizing committee for the AIME 2025 conference, contributing to the advancement of artificial intelligence in medicine.

The Causal Analysis of Biomedical Data Lecture Series is supported by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) RESCOM Program.
