Neuroscience Lecture Series – Prof. Bart Rutten

Explore the forefront of neuroscience with the LCSB Neuroscience Lecture Series, featuring scientific presentations from internationally renowned experts in various disciplines of neuroscience.

Meet the speaker! A networking aperitif with light snacks and refreshments will follow the presentation. Further one-on-one meeting opportunities with the speaker can be arranged by emailing Caroline Belot or Cathia Rausch.

Studying gene-environment interplay in mental and neurodegenerative disorders

In his talk, Bart Rutten will present key results and examples from his research on gene-environmental interplay, involving the world’s largest project on gene-environment interactions in schizophrenia and the first longitudinal, genome-wide studies on epigenetic changes in relation to risk and resilience to the effects of traumatic stress on mental health. Research by his team has revealed biological underpinnings of differential susceptibility to the impact of environmental stressors on mental health, in relation to psychosis, post-traumatic stress disorder, and dementia. In order to inspire possibilities for collaborations with researchers in his department through the European network of graduate schools of neuroscience EURON, Bart (as the chair of the department) will furthermore introduce examples of key research projects from other principal investigators in the department of Psychiatry and Neuropsychology at Maastricht University.

About the speaker

Bart P.F. Rutten is a professor of psychiatry and was previously appointed as professor of neuroscience of mental illness at the School for Mental Health and Neuroscience at Maastricht University. He chairs the Department of Psychiatry and Neuropsychology within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences and the clinical Department of Psychiatry at the Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC+) in Maastricht, the Netherlands.

Together with prof. Alexander Sack and prof. Arno Riedl, he is Director of the inter-faculty Center for Integrative Neuroscience (CIN) at Maastricht University.

Bart Rutten is an academic psychiatrist and translational neuroscientist with a research focus on gene-environment interplay and epigenetics in the onset and course of mental and neurodegenerative disorders. He is professor of Psychiatry at Maastricht University, Maastricht, the Netherlands, he chairs the academic Department of Psychiatry & Neuropsychology at Maastricht University and the clinical department of Psychiatry at Maastricht University Medical Centre, and acts as coordinator of the Horizon Europe funded project Youth-GEMs.

The Neuroscience Lecture Series is supported by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) RESCOM Program (RESCOM24/18810230/Neurosciences_LS).
