Pyroglutamate modification of pathogenic proteins in Alzheimer’s disease and beyond
Alzheimer’s disease is characterised by the formation of oligomeric and fibrillary aggregates of the amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide. There is a great variety of post-translational modifications of this peptide that affect its aggregation, proteolytic degradation and toxicity. I will specifically highlight mechanisms for the generation of the pathogenic pyroglutamate Aβ modification and strategies to interfere with its neurotoxic properties. I will also present novel data on the pyroglutamate modification of α-synuclein in synucleinopathies.
About the speaker
Steffen Roßner is Assistant Professor in Molecular Imaging in Neurosciences at the Paul Flechsig Institute – Centre of Neuropathology and Brain Research at the University of Leipzig. Here he also leads a research group investigating molecular and cellular mechanisms of post‑translational protein modifications in neurodegenerative and protein aggregation disorders with neuroinflammatory components, particularly focusing on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and stroke.
Prof. Roßner serves as Authorised Representative of the Rector for Professorial Tenure Procedures and is a member of the Habilitation Committee, the Animal Welfare Committee and the MD Committee on Neurosciences at the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig.

The Neuroscience Lecture Series is supported by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) RESCOM Program (RESCOM24/18810230/Neurosciences_LS).
