The title ’Europeanisation of private international law – how the EU is spreading its wings’ refers to the process of developing a common legal framework for private international law matters within the EU. This involves a shift of competence from national levels to the European level, with the aim to unify and harmonise rules on jurisdiction, applicable law, and the recognition and enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters.

The lecture will provide insight into the enormous influence the EU has had on private international law. It will discuss the EU regulations already in place as well as current and future developments. The role of the EU in establishing treaty relations with third countries in the context of the Hague Conference on Private International Law will also be considered.
