Dr. Lorenzo GRADONI

Lorenzo Gradoni has written extensively in the fields of public international law and EU law, including in several subfields such as the theory of legal sources, history of legal doctrine, international trade law, international criminal law, and international environmental law. His research currently focuses on the contemporary history of international customary law, climate change law, and international and transnational adjudication, particularly in the field of social media content moderation and out-of-court dispute settlement under the EU’s Digital Services Act.

He won of the Italian Society of International Law Prize (2008), the European Society of International Law Book Prize (2010), and the James Crawford Prize (2019).

Before joining the University of Luxembourg, he was senior research fellow at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for Procedural Law (2016-2023) and a professor of international law at Bologna University Law School (2005-2016). He was visiting professor at the Sorbonne Law School, the Universities of Turin, Florence and Trento, and Distinguished Guest at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg (2015-2016), where he served as Chief Scientific Advisor to the Max Planck Encyclopedia of International Procedural Law.

Lorenzo Gradoni graduated cum laude in Political Science–History at the University of Bologna, specializing in the History of International Relations (1998). He holds a master’s degree in European studies from Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (1999) and a PhD in EU Law from the University of Bologna (2003).
