Building on the ELI Charter, Prof. Tridimas offers expert insights to guide the Council of Europe in implementing the Reykjavík Principles for assessing and enhancing democratic systems.
In his capacity, as a Co-Reporter of the ELI Charter of Fundamental Constitutional Principles of a European Democracy, Professor Takis Tridimas, alongside Prof. Elise Muir, participated in an expert roundtable on democracy assessment.
This roundtable aimed to gather perspectives to support the intergovernmental Steering Committee on Democracy (CDDEM) in shaping guidelines for implementing the Reykjavík Principles for Democracy. The insights provided will assist Council of Europe Member States in evaluating and enhancing the state and quality of their democratic systems.
Prof. Tridimas was invited to offer recommendations on the structure, substance, and practical use of these parameters. The outcomes of their discussions will play a key role in shaping the Council of Europe’s intergovernmental initiatives, informing both the creation of the parameters and the approach for evaluating their implementation in practice.
The CDDEM was established following the commitment made by the Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe at their 4th Summit in Reykjavik in 2023, aimed at securing and strengthening democracy as outlined in the Reykjavík Principles for Democracy.
