Prof Catherine LÉGLU

Catherine Léglu is a Full Professor of Medieval French and Occitan Literature.

Catherine has published monographs on literary parody (2000), multilingualism in the narrative literature written in late-medieval Catalan, Occitan and French (2010), and the translation and adaptation of the biblical Samson in Anglo-Norman French texts and images (2018). Her published work focuses on issues of translation (Latin-to-vernacular; vernacular-to-vernacular), as well as word-and-image texts and adaptation. Genres range from late-medieval illustrated world histories and body-soul debates to the Danse Macabre (Journal of Literary Multilingualism, 2023).

Catherine teaches on the Bachelor en Cultures Européennes, in Romance Studies, including on francophone cinema.

Catherine is a Visiting Professor at the University of Reading (since 2019) and research associate at Bristol University (2024-25), working with colleagues in the Department of French and the Centre for Medieval Studies.

Before coming to Luxembourg in 2019, Catherine worked in the UK universities of Queen’s University Belfast (lecturer), Bristol (lecturer, senior lecturer) and Reading (professor), where she headed the department of Modern Languages and European studies in 2017-19. She was Director of the University of Reading Graduate Centre for Medieval Studies 2011-14. She was vice-rector for academic affairs at the University of Luxembourg 2019-2024.

Catherine obtained her PhD at the University of Cambridge, on the voice of the satirist in medieval Occitan poetry (1995). Her Bachelor degree was in Modern and Medieval Languages (French and Spanish), also at Cambridge.
