On 18 September 2025, we were delighted to welcome Prof. Albrecht Glitz from Universitat Pompeu Fabra.
As part of our lecture series on Cross-Border Labor Mobility, Prof. Glitz delivered an insightful lecture on “The Assimilation of Immigrants in their Host Countries”.
This lecture examined how immigrants assimilate into their host societies. It provided an overview of the key empirical patterns observed across countries and highlighted the main obstacles and facilitators of the assimilation process. Particular attention was given to immigrant wage assimilation and the challenges involved in accurately measuring it using standard datasets. An important insight was that immigrants’ wage assimilation is closely linked to the labour market impact of immigrants and the size and composition of new arrival cohorts. We discussed the underlying theoretical mechanism for this interplay and studied how it has shaped immigrants’ wage assimilation profiles in the United States over recent decades.
This lecture series is organised by Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER) and the Doctoral School in Economics, Finance and Management at the University of Luxembourg, in the framework of the Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR), Luxembourg-funded project ACROSS and financing scheme RESCOM.
