The University of Luxembourg’s Fintech Conference, in partnership with BIL and LHOFT, celebrated its 10th edition on 3 October 2024 with a day of discussion dedicated to examining emerging trends in Fintech such as digital central banking, crypto-assets and the decentralisation of finance. Each year, the conference brings together a mix of academic experts and industry professionals from Luxembourg and around the world to create a forum to share both research into the field, as well as practical considerations. Around 150 participants joined the hybrid event in-person and online.

After a welcome by Rector Jens Kreisel, Luxembourg Minister of Finance, Gilles Roth, opened the conference with the morning keynote. Minister Roth emphasised the need for vibrant Fintech research in Luxembourg to make the financial centre fit for the future. Another highlight from the conference was Karen O’Sullivan’s (CSSF) knowledgable discussion of the latest regulatory steps, including the Payment Services Directive 3 (‘PSD3’) and the Markets in Crypto-asset Regulation (‘MiCAR’) during the afternoon keynote.

The University has always been at the leading edge of knowledge and research in fintech. When the conference was launched a decade ago, fintech was still a niche topic. Today, the industry and the innovations that it has brought are considered the “new normal”. Professor Arner (University of Hong Kong) described the University of Luxembourg as “the centre of European Fintech research,” due to a steady stream of output ranging from articles and books as well as studies for regulators, to policy advice, and, last but not least, the interdisciplinary approach in the FNR-funded NCER-FT (National Centre of Excellence in Research FinTech).
