Look before you Leap? An Operational Analysis of Hybrid Entrepreneurship

Abstract

This research explores the ongoing debate between fully committed and hybrid entrepreneurship. Unlike committed entrepreneurs, hybrid entrepreneurs balance traditional employment with their ventures. We develop a model where an entrepreneur’s learning is proportional to their exploration effort and identify conditions that give rise to hybrid entrepreneurship. Furthermore, we examine how different forms of entrepreneurial support influence exploration strategies. Our findings suggest that fostering a conducive learning environment can be more effective than simply reducing startup costs in encouraging exploration efforts.
