On 3 April 2025, Ms. Lucia Maori and Mr. Noan Renault, students of the Master in Space, Communication and Media Law at the University of Luxembourg, won the European Rounds of the 2025 Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition, held at ESA Headquarters in Paris. Coached by Dr. Gabrielle Leterre and alumna Ms. Theodora Liameti, the team prevailed after six intense rounds. Ms. Maori’s performance was further distinguished by being awarded Best Oralist of the Final Round.
Reflecting on the experience, student Noan Renault shared:
“Winning the European Rounds of the Manfred Lachs Moot Court Competition is one of my greatest achievements as a student. It was a pleasure and an honour to represent the University of Luxembourg, and I am more than happy to see that the team’s efforts paid off. I am now excited for what’s ahead!”
Organised by the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition is one of the most prestigious international moots in the field of space law. It simulates proceedings before the International Court of Justice, challenging student teams to litigate timely and complex legal questions related to the peaceful use and governance of outer space.
The 2025 case concerns a dispute between the fictional States of Cronus and Admetus and addresses the legality of space activities conducted during an international conflict. It raises key issues of State responsibility, attribution, and international liability, particularly focusing on whether the provision of satellite-based telecommunications services by a private company from a neutral State to a belligerent party is consistent with international law.
As winners of the European Rounds, the University of Luxembourg team will represent Europe in the World Finals, to be held during the IISL’s annual Colloquium at the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Sydney, Australia, in September 2025.
The team also extends its heartfelt thanks to Prof. Mahulena Hofmann, holder of the SES Chair in Space, Communication and Media Law, Moot Court Coordinator Dr. Susana Muñoz, and our partner Clifford Chance Luxembourg, whose support and guidance were instrumental to the team’s success.
