Financing, natural resources and economic stability in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Organised by the University of Luxembourg’s Department of Economics and Management, the Association Tiers-Monde, the Université Omar Bongo and the Centre d’Economie Publique.

Workshop outline

This 5th workshop in development economics aims to consolidate economic analyses of the various aspects of economic stability (employment, migration, inflation, indebtedness, etc.) in sub-Saharan African countries, in relation to the issues of natural resource extraction and external and internal financing (public debt, FDI, PPP, savings, microfinance, etc.). A diversity of approaches (theoretical and/or empirical, quantitative and/or qualitative) is welcome.

The scope of the workshop includes the following themes:

  • Natural resources and economic stability: natural resources management, natural resources and employment, inflation and energy, cost of living crisis, political stability and economic stability…
  • Financing economies: public debt management, attractiveness of economies, risks of financial crises, equity investment strategies, mobilization of internal financial resources…
  • Environmental policy: environmental taxation, adaptation to climate change, human-wildlife conflicts, environmental inequalities, valuation of environmental goods, global goods, impact of climate change…
  • Natural resource management: the sustainability of extractive resource exploitation, the sustainability of forestry exploitation, revisiting the natural resource curse hypothesis…
  • Sectoral public policies and economic stability: education, social or financial inclusion, health, gender, security…

Call for contributions

We encourage the submission of complete articles, even if it is a first draft, or a summary, based on methods from economics or other social sciences. Selection criteria will be rigorous with respect to methodological soundness, article’s specific contribution in terms of the existing literature and accordance with the themes of the workshop.

The text can be written in French or English. The cover page of the proposal will include: Name, surname, status, institution, email, postal address, telephone number of all authors and specify the author presenting the contribution.

  • 20 December 2024 : Deadline for reception of proposed contributions.
  • 15 January 2025 Scientific Committee’s decisions upon selection of contributions.
  • 10 February 2025 : Deadline for registration and sending papers.
  • 13 & 14 March 2025 : Workshop in Libreville.
