    Outreach event: Professor Hofmann gave a seminar to judges from Luxembourg and Germany

    On the 17th of November 2023, Professor Hofmann presented a seminar to a group of judges from Germany and Luxembourg at the University of Luxembourg’s Belval campus. The seminar covered the topic of AI in European public law.

    Prof. Schneider: 6th symposium of the high-profile Scientific Association for All Regulatory Law

    Prof. Schneider participated in the 6th symposium of the high-profile Scientific Association for All Regulatory Law in October 2022 in Berlin at Humboldt University. The symposium focused on the regulation of digital platforms. Prof. Schneider gave a lecture on “Platform regulation as a building block of European AI governance“. Other topics included the “European Union Digital Services Act” and “Data Protection through Platform Regulation”. The lecture will be published in a book in 2022 edited by Prof. Ruffert from Humboldt University.

    Professor Jens-Peter Schneider presentation at the ZIF Bielefeld

    July 27-28, 2022: University of Bielefeld organised a conference “ökonomische und rechtliche Herausforderungen im Kontext von intelligenten Produkten” (“Economic and legal challenges in the context of intelligent products”).

    The project INDIGO member Professor Jens-Peter Schneider gave a presentation “Platform Regulation as a Central Cornerstone of European AI Governance“. Professor Jens-Peter Schneider pointed out to the relevance of safeguards against over-blocking of content and harmful or illegal content moderation implemented by AI and additional algorithmic tools. He warned about the risks of harmful or illegal over-blocking and content moderation and discussed on safeguards against deficiencies caused by automated content moderation, especially considering the nowadays relevance of the role of online platforms and search engines for the public debate. Further, his analysis included safeguards provided by Digital Services Act and an explanatory outlook to the potential guiding principles of European AI governance from the perspective of EU administrative law.

    INDIGO team members of KIT at the CPDP

    Karlsruhe Institute of Technology organises a panel on “Artificial Intelligence at the EU Border” at Computers, Privacy & Data Protection (#CPDP) 2022 in Brussels: Smart Borders? Artificial Intelligence at the EU Border.

    The panel discusses on how AI applications affect decision-making at EU borders, address benefits, risks, and concerns for data protection and fundamental rights, and debate regulatory safeguards. The discussion will especially focus on the AI Act proposal with regard to which Statewatch has recently released a report on missing safeguards on migration and asylum, and, together with other human rights organisations, proposed amendments to ensure fundamental rights protection.

    Moderator of the panel is the INDIGO team member Professor Dr. Franziska Boehm (KIT). Speakers of the panel are Dr. Paulina Jo Pesch (KIT, INDIGO), Dr. Aleksandrs Cepilovs (eu-LISA), Dr. David Reichel (European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights), and Niovi Vavoula (Queen Mary University of London).

    INDIGO kick-off meeting – 22/23 Oct. 2020

    The INDIGO project online kick-off meeting took place on October 22-23, 2020.

    The University of Luxembourg organized and virtually hosted the INDIGO kick-off meeting. All partners gathered to present their research teams, discuss and fine-tune the upcoming research activities, streamline the administrative procedures and coordinate on the milestones of the project.

    It gave the opportunity to all partners and stakeholders to lay the foundations for a successful project and participate actively in the building of a strong research team.

    The INDIGO project officially started on November 1st, 2020 and will last 36 months.

    INDIGO project to receive over €1.4m for digitisation research

    Professor Herwig Hofmann has been awarded a large research grant to conduct a three-year multi-disciplinary research project on impact of digitalisation on multi-jurisdictional implementation of policies in Europe.

    The project ‘INformation in the EU’s DIgitalised GOvernance’ (INDIGO) is conducted in cooperation with professors from the University of Helsinki in Finland, University of Freiburg and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany and the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain. 

    Financing was awarded by a consortium of national research funding agencies in Europe (NORFACE). The project underwent a gruelling two-phase selection process leaving the external reviewers particularly impressed by the excellence of the scholars and their research-history.

    The project’s leader, Herwig Hofmann is Professor of European and Transnational Public Law and Head of the Department of Law at the University of Luxembourg. He is one of the founding professors of the Faculty of Law Economics and Finance of the University of Luxembourg and has recently also been granted FNR funding for a large Doctoral Training Unit on Digitalisation, Innovation and Law (DILLAN) to be hosted at the Department of Law.

    The project is set to begin in Autumn 2020. 

    Prof. Hofmann commented, “I am delighted to announce this wonderful news and work with my colleagues here in Luxembourg as well as in Spain, Finland and Germany. Our work is especially pertinent in these challenging times of government and governance with European and global dimensions. The pandemic has highlighted how the digital environment has become increasingly significant and vital to maintaining society.”
