Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of our daily lives, influencing everything from our online interactions to workplace tools. To help demystify AI and clarify what it truly is – and isn’t – the Digital Learning Hub (DLH) offers dedicated support groups in the context of the “Elements of AI” initiative in Luxembourg.

Elements of AI is an online course that provides easy-to-understand information and practical examples on the topic of artificial intelligence. The University of Helsinki and the Finnish company MinnaLearn launched the course in 2018 with a mission to educate one percent of the Finnish population about the basics of artificial intelligence. In response to high demand, the course was rapidly translated into multiple languages and has since achieved global success, with its fourth edition set to launch in Luxembourg in 2025.

We exchanged with Dr. Daniela Gierschek, Training Manager at the Digital Learning Hub, who shared valuable insights into this initiative and her research aimed at making AI accessible and understandable for everyone.

What are the Digital Learning Hub’s plans for the 2025 support groups to the EofAI course?

At the Digital Learning Hub, we are committed to making our courses as accessible and impactful as possible to help close the digital skills gap in Luxembourg. As part of our Data and AI courses, we cover a wide range of topics, from introductory courses that demystify AI for the public to advanced courses on data analysis and machine learning techniques. Offering onsite support groups for the Elements of AI MOOC perfectly fits into our course offer on Data and AI as it creates a welcoming space for learners to discuss course topics, exchange ideas and connect with others who share their interests. In 2025, we will offer support groups for the Elements of AI MOOC for the third consecutive year.

In a strive to constantly adapt our offer to market needs and keep it relevant and engaging, we plan to invite industry professionals from Luxembourg and the Greater Region to share their knowledge and showcase real-world AI applications from their area of expertise. That way learners do not only get the opportunity to ask questions and seek guidance on the course material, which is already possible online in a designated forum, but also a chance to see firsthand how AI is transforming both private and professional life in Luxembourg.

We are actively planning this support group offer with our team and are already looking forward to welcoming participants onsite in 2025. This support group offer promises to be an enriching start to exploring the world of AI, a journey that learners can continue at the Digital Learning Hub with our more advanced courses after the Elements of AI course is completed.

Your PhD work focused on detecting sentiment in Luxembourgish user comments. Does this research continue to inspire your work and if so, how?

I completed my PhD at the beginning of 2022, just months before OpenAI released GPT-3.5 and drastically changed the way people perceive AI. Suddenly, everyone was talking about AI. Since then, increasingly advanced Large Language Models (LLMs) have been released on the market making AI not just a research interest but also something accessible to a broader public. I am still amazed on how fast the field is evolving and how much has changed in those past years. Challenges that I had working with a lower resource language such as Luxembourgish still exist but have significantly decreased due to newer research on LLMs. This experience has shown me firsthand how crucial it is to always keep on learning and provide the best and most up-to-date courses to our learners as possible. I am excited to share my passion for AI at the Digital Learning Hub and to help people discover that AI is not just a buzzword but an exciting field full of real-world potential.
