About

From 2022 to 2024, the first CSL project at the crossroads of institutional history, social history and economic history consisted of writing a history of the salary Chambers on the occasion of their centenary. Indeed, the Labor Chamber and the Private Employees Chamber, created by the law of April 4, 1924, merged in 2008 to form the Chamber of Employees (CSL), whose role is to struggle against inequalities in Luxembourg. This Chamber represents the unions and contributes to the supply of the social state. The printed version of this History of the CSL was presented during the academic session on January 25, 2024. An enhanced digital version with footnotes, a bibliography, photos and several appendices, including a dictionary of members of the salary Chambers, will soon be available. On June 4, 2024, a workshop was held to discuss sources and data relating to inequalities in Luxembourg and came up with many ideas for consideration, particularly around the use of cadastral sources, census data, civil registers, health data, and taxation. The papers from this workshop will be published in a few months. The project continues by attempting to collect all data concerning inequalities, especially income and capital, in order to provide a long-term view for the ‘Social Panorama’, which has been published annually since 2011 by the CSL. Writing a long run history of inequalities in Luxembourg is at the core of the project. Additionally, the project will organize a series of conferences on the topic and complete the dictionary already initiated in the dictionary already initiated in the digital work titled ‘The Labor Parliament: History of the Chamber of Employees in Luxembourg (1924-2024), 100 years at the heart of the Luxembourg social model’.
